79/80: Top 20 Podsafe Faves of 2007

I made an executive decision to combine the final two Countdown Shows into a double episode featuring my favorite podsafe songs of 2007. Enjoy and have a very happy New Year's Day. New shows will resume this coming weekend.

78: There's Good In Everything

Merry Christmas. I've decided the final two shows will be a Top 20 Countdown of my favorite podsafe songs of the year. Your input is welcome, of course. Sending me an email, listing your favorites, may very well influence what I play on these two shows. Note, however, that I'm only counting podsafe songs released in 2007, so anything else will be ignored.

77: Ten Pipers Piping

Merry Christmas Eve.

WARNING: The Nice Peter track has some bad language, so this is probably not the episode to play for the family. It is, however, very funny so I had to include it. I discovered, unfortunately after I recorded the show, that Nice Peter had a clean version. D'oh!

75: floating and rolling

There are ten days left in 2007. Here are another ten songs to get you through them.

Also: I just got word that Michael McCartney's show, The Time Machine, will be extended this week. He'll be playing some great Christmas songs, in addition to the usual pop, starting at 3PM EST. So between The Time Machine and Pop Garden Radio, that's twelve hours of great streaming music today.

74: Running Through Your Dreams

I fully intended to start getting these out last weekend but, once again, life got in the way. Some notes on this set: I decided to include the Nelson Bragg song after hearing him interviewed on Pop Garden Radio last weekend. If you're free on Saturday night, Adam will be doing his annual Christmas show from 10PM to 3AM EST. I plan to be in his chat room during the show, so it should be a lot of fun.

Also: The Axe Riverboy track really stood out for me. When I went to research the album info after recording the show, I discovered why. Axe Riverboy is the pseudonym taken on by Xavier from Tahiti 80 for his solo project. I suppose I'll just have to go and buy the CD on iTunes now.

72: Make It Last All Night

This is the first in a series of music-only episodes designed to help me clear out the backlog of great music I've been wanting and needing to play. Time has been a luxury these last couple of months and I fear it may not ease up in the next month or so. There will be hosted shows this month, but expect several of these music-only shows in the next few weeks.

71: Platters of Purest Gold

As I mention in this show, I'll likely be doing a handful of music-only shows in the coming weeks. I've got a backlog of great music to play and been too busy with other projects to devote the time to put together the shows. Hopefully things will ease up in the next couple of months, though, so try and bear with me.

64: A Natural Eventuality

No, as a matter of fact, I didn't do a show last weekend. I saw the best Jonathan Coulton and Paul and Storm show ever at the Birchmere. Then, I vegged out a lot. I'll try and get a bonus show up this weekend to make up for it. There's no shortage of new music to play off the PMN. I just selected random songs off the playlist for tonight's show, and I may do it again tomorrow or Sunday. Enjoy this one, though, while you're waiting for the next one.

Little things are bound to go wrong on any Friday the 13th. Despite some minor glitches with the show—the usual flubs on my part and one track at 56kbps that I didn't realize until after I played it and looked at the file—despite all that, it's been a pretty good day, which started with a great deal on Cheap Trick's "Music For Hangovers."

Broken Bones Need 'Casts

By now, anyone who cares about it has probably heard about the appeals falling through on the Copyright Royalty Board's ridiculous fee increases. Being a podcaster, I should care more about this, right? Well, I've been doing a lot of thinking and, well, maybe this isn't such a bad thing for the listening public. Internet radio listeners, like podcast listeners, represent a pretty small percentage of the audio 'cast listening audience as a whole, but those listeners are more cutting edge than your average listener, and their number are growing. Independent musicians have yet another big chance to get more ears listening to their music, a good portion of which is far better than the stuff doled out by the name brand acts.

Independent Musicians: Get your music available on services like the Podsafe Music Network and IODA's Promonet. Contact podcasters and Internet Radio shows and allow them to play your songs fee-free.

Internet Radio Stations: Go podsafe, guys! Don't let the Big Guys run you out of town! There are bands that want the airplay; there are tons of amazing acts that want more promotion! And it isn't like the little guys will see a dime of those increased fees. Okay, maybe just a dime. Sure, it'll be tough at first, but look at the DJs of yore--great radio is about finding the next big act and exposing it to the world with personality. Are you leaders or followers?

Listeners: Support the independents! If you hear a song on a podsafe show that you like, go see them live. Buy their CDs at the shows and when you get that CD signed by the artist, tell them you heard their song on an Internet Radio Station or a podcast.

The Recording Industry is broken and, no matter how well-meaning they are, applying H.R. & S. Band-Aids aren't going to make the bones heal. The only thing that'll help will be "casts"--podcasts, shoutcasts, and Net Radio Stations.

S1: Splitsville

I had a fun time doing the research and putting this one together. I'm not sure who will be the next act I profile but I'm open to suggestions. And comments. Tell me what you like and what you don't like about this first episode. Is the bio stuff between songs too long or not comprehensive enough? I want to keep it short, but I don't want to leave too much out either.

      52: You Speak In Volumes

After a very unfortunate technical difficulty with the USB microphone I use that made me sound a lot like Marcel Marceau, the issue has been resolved. Turns out that a piece of software installed during the week wrecked the drivers for the mike. Once I uninstalled the software, all was well. And it's a good thing too, since I don't know if I could have kept this show in me for another twenty-four hours.

      Apologies

Show #52 will be late. I just finished recording it and something went very wonky. The mike was dead throughout and so nothing was picked up. And since it's almost 1am here on the east coast, I'll just call it a night and re-record it all in the morning.

My sincere apologies for the delay.

Of course, this means that you could still call in an audio comment for the show at 206-338-5792.

      51: Layers and Layers

This episode was rife with technical problems that forced me to re-record three times tonight, hence the lateness of the hour. But it's worth the wait. The new Mooney Suzuki track is simply fantastic and, if this one and "99%" are representative of the new CD, it's going to be one great friggin' album.

        50: I Wish I Was Young Again

Sorry this was a whole lot later than usual, but after last week's show I managed to get myself really sick. The voice is almost back to normal, maybe still a bit scratchy. Nothing particularly special in the fiftieth show. The John Hoskinson CD Pancho Fantastico is out on Tuesday and everyone should pick this one up. I may even like this more than last year's Miscellaneous Heathen (and I loved that one).

Dime No. 50: I Wish I Was Young Again

        Steve Robinson "Forget About Love"

49: In The Deep End For The Weekend

I tweaked the levels in tonight's show slightly. Hopefully it helps. I've had a very scratchy throat all day, and it seems to be getting worse (I suspect that I'm coming down with something), so I tried to keep the talkie stuff to a minimum. I'd really hate to get sick this close to #50...

        48: Chinese Fire Drill

I recorded this late Thursday night for an early Friday posting. So nobody is allowed to complain that this one went up late. Not sure if there will be a Memorial Day show yet or not. It'll depend on how my weekend goes. But for now, enjoy this one.
