Suitcase 45s - No. 3: Merry Christmas

While working on the hundredth episode of the show, I thought I'd use the under-utilized Suitcase 45s to showcase a couple of my favorite podsafe Christmas songs. Merry Christmas, everyone, and a Happy New Year.

97: Like An Old Balloon

This coming Monday the 13th will mark the two-year anniversary of the podcast. And it has come a long way since those early, non-podsafe days. It would have been cool if the hundredth show coincided with the anniversary, but it just wasn't meant to be. This installment of the podcast is especially entertaining and reminds me, in some ways, of that first podcast. Several of the artists and bands here have become favorites of mine in the course of 97 episodes. I hope some of them will become your favorites as well.

The Drop.Io

I do plan to get a new show out over the holiday weekend, but I wanted to quickly pop in and let everyone know that Show Number 100 is on the horizon. I started the podcast in Fall of 2006 with the intention of getting some much needed notice for indie artists that you just don't hear on the radio. In the past two years, I've shared my discoveries with you and you've shared many of yours with me.

I've set up a drop.io account at http://drop.io/suitcasefullofdimes to encourage more sharing through the next two years and beyond. The drop.io includes a voicemail line (646-495-9203, extension 67927) if you want to call and leave a message for the podcast.

For more information on what you can do with drop.io, click here.

Note: The required password will be mentioned on the show starting with Show 96.

90: You Better Look Around

Ever have one of those days where you go to record all the talkie bits of your music podcast and discover too late that the recording levels were far lower than they needed to be? Maybe it's just me. Fortunately for you, the listener, I re-recorded the bits and put everything back together so I don't sound like I'm whispering between songs. I recorded the talkie bits using my new Shure 55SH Series II mic onto a Marantz PMD620 Recorder, which just means that you're hearing me in stereo now. You may not have even realized you were hearing me in mono before.

Also, upon reflection, I'm not 100% certain it was Pop Garden Radio where I heard The Orchid Highway. It might have been The Time Machine. Either way, they're both excellent shows worth your listening time.

We Are Experiencing Technical Difficulties...

Sorry it's taking so much time to get a new show up, folks. I've been upgrading the podcasting setup with a new laptop for (eventual) mobile shows, a new mixer, and a groovy new mike. I had set aside some time this weekend to record a new show on the old setup, but the old setup was apparently older than I thought. It's now moved on to the great beyond where it frolic in the clouds with TI99-4As, Commodore 64s, and Apple 2Cs for eternity.

I'm going to try and salvage the hard drive tonight so I might conceivably get a new show out within the next few days. As for replacing the desktop, our association will be auctioning off their old computers in the next couple weeks, so I may be able to snag one cheap that way.

Bear with me. I have some really awesome tracks lined up for the next few episodes.

84: Trying to remember when I could fix anything with sound.

Lots of yummy music in this edition of the show. I meant to throw in a special thank you at the end to Parthenon Huxley for stopping on a dime and throwing together a couple of excellent "show IDs" this morning.

Also, I urge you to send me some feedback regarding the little news segment and the midpoint of the show. I know it's a bit raw, hence the "no frills," but I really want to know if I should put more effort into it or just pile it on the scrap heap.

Oh, and of course, subscribe to the James Deem/Ed James Popcast in iTunes and check out information for the Charlotte Popfest in July.
