15: Santa's Bringing You a Big Bag o' Dimes, Part One

Two more shopping days left until the big day and I'm maximizing my gift-purchasing as much as humanly possible. So, although this show's got the usual ten, the whole show's a little bit shorter than the usual. Like that foul little elf with the multiple nicotine patches that taunts me as I leave my local Super Target.

11: Black Friday

I came across a really fun little video this morning of The Format's "Dog Problems." Be sure to watch for the little "Bohemian Rhapsody" homage near the end.

As for tonight, I was going to play a certain Steely Dan song in honor of today's big shopping day, but changed my mind at the last minute and decided to play Flogging Molly instead. The rest of the show is just a bit of everything. So did everyone get their Christmas shopping done today?

9: It Only Hurts When I Laugh...

Director Robert Altman (M*A*S*H, The Player), passed away at 81 this morning. As a small tribute to the man, I close this episode with a cover of the theme from M*A*S*H by The Manic Street Preachers. It's not much in the way of a tribute, but the movie and the subsequent series, was an important part of my cultural growth so I felt like something was called for.

The rest is just sort of a hodgepodge. I have the week off from work so I'm going to try and put out three shows this week.

A little late, I know. Sorry. Sometimes it's just too tough to decide which ten songs will make it in.

This week, I saw the '80s band The Plimsouls and opening act Parallax Project in Vienna, VA. If you get a chance to see these guys live, jump at the opportunity. Their studio albums are great, but they're amazing to see live.

3: Remembering (1983-1987)

Many of my friends are celebrating their twenty year high school reunion this weekend and, since I'm unable to join in on all of the festivities while they're in town, I wanted to commemorate the occasion in my own way. In this special edition of Suitcase Full of Dimes are ten tracks I've pulled from my ginormous CD collection that fall between 1983 and 1987. From the cheesy pop synths of Journey to the Will Smith referencing Sha Na Na, I feel these ten tracks represent the inclusive years pretty well.

1: First Dime

This would be the official beginning. I'm even going defy superstitions and begin this on a Friday the 13th. While simultaneously breaking a mirror on a black cat under a ladder.

The initial shows will just be music. Over time, I'll get my microphone issues worked out and actually talk a little and tell you about the music itself. For now, you can read about it and follow the links from here. Also, until I get some other stuff worked out, I'll be hosting the files via Rapidshare (a "one-click service"), which means no automatic downloads just yet.

Why all the hassle? Why not just wait until everything's ready and in place? Because I'm impatient and just want to get these files out for my friends to listen to and enjoy. You may not like every song here and I encourage you to leave comments telling what you like and what you don't. Feel free to suggest tracks for future shows.

Here's what's in this show:
Dime No. 1: Gotta Start Somewhere

Sugarbomb "Hello" (from Bully)
Big Star "13" (from #1 Record)
El Goodo "If I Were A Song" (from El Goodo)

Coming Soon...

It's been my intention for a while now to create a music podcast. I've been working on it and it's on its way. For now, I've created some test shows and shared them with friends. I will start posting new shows here soon, possibly as soon as Friday evening.

Because there's no RSS feed involved yet, I hesitate to even call this a podcast. So I've decided that, until I'm set up with a real domain, hosting, automatic download via rss feed, etc., I'll just call it a mixcast.

Watch this space...
